Cake Decoration - Icing and a Cake Box Does it Every Time

In this article we will explore some ideas to start you off in your adventure in cake decorating and presentation. It includes decorating tools, techniques and plus how to enhance your cake with an appropriate cake box.

The actual techniques and steps are readily available everywhere in books and on the Internet so if you like anything here, just do some searching and you will find what you need. You will also find it easy to make or buy the perfect cake box to further enhance your creation. Don't worry if any of the ideas sound too advanced (they are not!). With a little practice and some enthusiasm, you will perfect them along the way.

A Bouquet of Icing Roses

This works wonderfully on almost any cake, and looks especially elegant and endearing on a wedding or Valentine's cake. In terms of actual difficulty, this is one of the simplest tricks around, with many tutorial sites teaching you various ways to craft an icing rose. When you know how to create one, you will easily make several more and you are done. Combining red and pink roses covered with white icing over your cake is good design for younger generation of cake or pastry lovers. White or light chocolate roses are fantastic on dark or pure chocolate flavor cake.

A hint when using icing roses is to ensure you factor in the extra height that they will add to your cake. The last thing you need is finding out at the last minute that your cake is too high for the cake box that you have purchased.

Lined Hearts

It is easy to see why hearts are as popular as roses when it comes to icing decorations; since they seem fantastic and effortless to create! With minimal practice, you can make nice symmetrical heart shapes that fit into any cake seamlessly. Using an icing bag and selected tips (there are heart-shaped tips too for added effect), draw out a simple heart shape and you are done! You can line the heart shapes around the circumference of the cake (hearts look best with round cakes), or in a single horizontal line at the center. If you are really looking to spice things up, you can stack one heart on top of another in staggered manner too.Presenting your cake in a heart shaped box will make it look even more impressive.

Drawings

Aside from 3D structures like roses and hearts, you can also use icing to draw shapes and designs on your cake. You can obtain this if you have fondant icing using a very thin icing end, on top of a leveled layer. As for what to draw though, I'll leave it to your imagination!

If you are a bit light on in the creative department look for a shape you like in a book or magazine, trace it, cut out the shape then place it on the cake and pipe around it.Put it in a super stunning cake box that will make it look a million dollars and people will not even notice its simplicity.

These are just some ideas for you to start off your cake decorating. Never be intimidated to blend and combine all and see what you can make out of it. There are literally limitless ways for you to decorate a cake so make use of your own creativity to do the rest! Also, remember that if you are using a cake box that you choose one that complements and enhances your decorating efforts.

Using melted chocolate as cake decoration?

I'm making a cake this weekend and what I'm planning on doing is melting white chocolate, using food coloring (I'm thinking red) and then using a pastry bag to decorate and/or write on the cake. I've never done this before so I'm wondering...will the heat of the melted chocolate cause the frosting to get melty as well? Has anyone done this before?

It depends on what type of food coloring you use. If you use powdered food coloring, it should work. If you use liquid food coloring, it could cause your chocolate to seize and turn clumpy. With chocolate, any water that gets into it will make it clump and seize. I have heard there is a special coloring sold at some craft stores. As far as the melting of the icing, it shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure your careful. White chocolate will burn very easily if your not careful. Melt it just enough for it to flow and all the chips or pieces are melted. Also, white chocolate is hard to get the right consistancy. Play with it on a practice piece of cloth to see if it works for you. I'd check Michael's for their colorings. Good luck.
