The Earth Friendly Soy Candle

If you like candles and want to burn a candle that is earth friendly, a soy candle is what you need. If you are considering making soy candles, one of the first things you need to do is learn as much as you can about soy wax.

A good soy candle use wax from natural soybeans. The oil is extracted from the soybean flakes and is partially-hydrogenated. Soybeans are grown in several parts of the country. Most of the soybeans you see at your local craft store come from Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana. The advantages of using soybean wax are that it is a very high quality type of wax. Soy wax has a reputation for burning cleaner and smoother than traditional wax that you normally would see in candles made from paraffin wax. Where a traditional paraffin candle burns black soot, the soybean candle burns white soot. No matter what type of candle you burn, you will have some soot escaping from the candle. The difference is that a soy candle has soot that is not harmful and it won't get all over your furniture.

There is little difference in learning how to make soy candles verses traditional paraffin candles. Since all candles contain some amount of wax (even gel candles), it makes sense that the creation process is very similar.

       Animal fat is not an ingredient of soy wax

Here are a few steps to making a soy candle:

Step 1 – Decide on how many soy candles you want to make. If you are planning on using a votive candle it takes about two ounces of wax per votive.

Step 2 – Melt your wax and make sure you are doing this in a controlled area and you are a control method to regulate your temperature.

Step 3 – Once the wax is melted you need to add your color to your wax. Be very careful when adding color to your wax to make sure you don't' get burned by the wax. You need to have something like a flat bottomed wire whisk to stir the color into the wax.

Step 4
Pour your wax into your mold and set aside to cool. Cooling time can vary, but around 5 hours is a good starting point. Using a refrigerator can speed this process immensely.
